How to refund a customer

Mistakes happen, and a quick, fair refund keeps a customer's trust. There are three ways to do it, depending on how much you are refunding and how the order was paid.

Find the payment

Open the order, go to its Payment section, and click Edit next to the payment. Or open the customer, click All Payments, and pick the payment. Either way you land on the payment page.

Full refund, in the admin

On the payment page, click Refund (the button shows the amount, for example Refund $54.00) and confirm. The full charge goes back to the customer's card and the payment shows as Refunded. This needs the support role or above.

Partial refund, in Stripe

The admin refunds the whole charge only. For part of it, click View Payment on Processor Dash on the payment page. The charge opens in your Stripe dashboard. Click Refund there, change the amount, pick a reason, and confirm.

Refund as credits instead

If you would rather keep the money on account, add the amount to the customer's credits and note the order in the reason. The customer spends it on their next order. See How to add credits to a customer account. This is also the right move when the order was paid with credits or a gift card, since there is no card charge to reverse.

After a refund

A refund does not cancel the order. If the order should not go out, mark it inactive as well. See How to cancel a customer order.
