How to create discounts

A good discount code brings a new customer in, rewards a regular, or turns a slow week into a busy one. A discount code (also called a coupon or promo code) takes money off an order at checkout, and you decide exactly who gets it, how much, and for how long.

Find it under Discounts & Credits > Discounts.

Creating a code

  1. Click New Discount.
  2. Pick the Discount Type (see below).
  3. Type the code customers enter under Customer Code, or click Generate a Code.
  4. Give it an Internal Name for your team and a Display Name that customers see.
  5. Click Add & Edit. The full discount page opens.

Codes are not case sensitive: WELCOME, welcome and Welcome all work.

Discount codes have a minimum length, set with the Min Code Length setting in admin settings. The minimum applies to a new discount and to a changed code. Codes you already have keep working. To see which of your current codes are easy to guess, open the Easy-to-Guess Codes tab in Stored value: gift card and credit balances, tax, and expiry.

Discount types

The Discount Type list shows the types your site uses, for example:

  • % Off the order.
  • $ Off the order, a flat amount.
  • Free Order, the meals on the house. Delivery and order fees are also waived by default (see Free Order discounts and fees, below).
  • Meals for $X each, a fixed price per meal.
  • Free Meals, a number of meals for free.
  • Delivery Discount, off the delivery fee only.
  • Meal Plan Discount, for plan orders only.

Gift cards are not in this list: they have their own Gift Cards page. See Gift Cards page: find, change and track every gift card.

Setting it up

The discount page groups its settings into sections.

  • Active Rules: Active, and when it ends: an expiry date, or Never Expires. A new discount starts inactive, so tick Active when it is ready.
  • Users: All Users, or New Users Only for a customer's first order.
  • Amounts: the percentage or the amount, depending on the type.
  • Restrictions: Minimum Items Per Order, Minimum $ Amount Per Order, Maximum Items Per Discount and Maximum Uses Per Customer.
  • Other Flags & Settings: Allow on Plans, Only on Plan Orders, Waive Delivery Fees and Waive Order Fees.
  • Category Exclusions: keep the discount off chosen categories, such as merchandise.

Click Update to save.

Free Order discounts and fees

A Free Order discount waives the cost of meals in the cart. Two boxes under Other Flags & Settings decide the rest: Waive Delivery Fees takes off the delivery fee, and Waive Order Fees takes off your order fees.

  • Both boxes are optional, and available to be set on any discount. A Free Order discount starts with both boxes ticked by default, so the whole order can be free.
  • Optional fees, or ones that depend on the customer, are not waived: for example, a late fee or a tip the customer decides to add.

Copying a discount

To make a discount like one you already have, click Copy on its row in the list, or on its page, and confirm. The copy opens with the same settings, its code gets -COPY at the end, and its Internal Name gets "(copy)". It starts turned off: check it, change the code if you like, then tick Active. Copying needs the Manager role.

Ready-made codes in one click

On the Discounts page, Create Common Discounts adds ready-made welcome, first-responder, trainer, owner and thank-you codes that your site does not have yet. Edit them like any other discount.

Ideas

  • A welcome code for New Users Only, shared in your email signup and your site banner.
  • "Free delivery over $75": a discount with Waive Delivery Fees and a Minimum $ Amount Per Order of 75.
  • A thank-you code for your regulars, with Maximum Uses Per Customer set to 1.
